OHAOZARA LOCAL GOVERNMENT EDUCATION AUTHORITY
The coming of His Excellency, Engr. Dr. David Nweze Umahi to power as Governor of Ebonyi State has been a blessing to the state and her people. His coming has made institutions like Ohaozara Local Government Education Authority to begin to function properly. The Local Government Education Authority has continued to carry out the policies of the governor and has ensured that His Excellency’s education agenda are adequately stepped down in the Local Government.
The Local Government Education Authority is made up of about five (5) departments: Personnel, Accounts, Store, Planning, Research and Statistics (PRS), and Quality Assurance Department. These departments have worked and are still working as a family to achieve the aims and objectives of government. The best achievements of the Local Government Education Authority are peace, harmony and a conducive working environment in the Local Government Education Authority. Other achievements, activities and programme of the Local Government Education Authority during the period under review of 2015 to date are enumerated below.
The coming to power of Akubaraoha brought into realization the desire of the Local Government Education Authority and a massive construction of brand new buildings in all schools across the three communities of Uburu, Okposi and Ugwulangwu, which make up the Local Government Area. Pupils now learn under a relaxed, conducive and beautiful environment.
Secondly, the classroom blocks that were built were followed with massive provision of double seater desks. The store department ensured that all schools benefited. They (The Store Department) moved to harmonize the supplied desks so that those who needed them collected their share. The mobilization of this school furniture was made possible by the Local Government Education Authority through the Store Department. Also, the Local Government Education Authority ensured that the supplied Library Resource Materials and Teaching Aids got to the schools that would put them into proper use.
It is worthy to mention the supply of white boards to schools. The government of Ebonyi State led by Akubaraoha is a listening one. Teachers have complained over the years of eye problems emanating from chalk particles entering their eyes during teaching. The problem has been permanently solved by the supply of these boards, which is a brand new innovation in our classrooms.
The Account Department of the Local Government Education Authority has been up and doing in the area of ensuring that teachers salaries were not delayed. This is to bring into life the policy of our wonder working governor, in the area of prompt payment of workers’ salaries and allowances on or before 15th of every month. The accounts department of the Local Government Education Authority has not lagged behind in preparing all the paper work leading to the monthly payment of workers’ salary.
The personnel department, which is the coordinating department of the Local Government Education Authority, has not been left out in the running of the Local Government Education Authority. 2015 to date has witnessed massive promotion and implementation of promotion arrears. The department has scrutinized the list of beneficiaries and made sure that those who were due benefited. Omissions on promotion list have been eliminated.
Retirees are not left out as the Personnel Department has removed all bottle necks that hitherto delayed the movement of files of these categories of workers, who have served the state meritoriously from the Local Government Education Authority to the state. This has ensured that those who have retired begin to collect their pensions promptly.
Another department that has contributed in no small measure to the achievements highlighted is the Planning, Research and Statistics (PRS) Department. The nominal roll of teachers, schools and the school needs are always masterfully kept on monthly basis. The not-too-long conduct of personnel audit of the UBEC was highly successful in the Local Government Education Authority due to the effort of this department. It is on record that this programme was extended to the private schools in the Local Government Education Authority.
In the agricultural sector, the agric programme of the state government is being realized in the schools. The quality Assurance Department has monitored the implementation of the agric grant given to pilot schools in the Local Government
Education Authority. The Home grown school feeding programme has been successful because of the effort of the Local Government Education Authority in this regard.
Continuous training and re-training of teachers to improve teacher performance has been a priority in the state’s Education Agenda. The Local Government Education Authority, through the Quality Assurance department has always recommended the appropriate teachers for re-training programmes.
The department has carried out robust monitoring and supervision of schools and teachers, which led to improved performance in both the unified examinations and external examinations like the Common Entrance Examination, both State and Federal and the First School Leaving Certificate Examinations.
In fact, the activities of the Quality Assurance department of the Local Government Education Authority led to its participation in the training of her members of staff by UNICEF attracted by the state government.
The Local Government Education Authority participated in so many activities within the time under review. Among which are:
1. The 8th edition of all primary school sports jamboree.
2. 1st edition of primary school football competition.
3. Centenary essay competition, which the LGEA contingent represented Ebonyi South Zone at the state level.
4. Lafarge literacy competition. The contestants from the LGEA defeated all comers to qualify for the south East zonal competition in Enugu.
In conclusion, the Local Government Education Authority has performed creditably well under the period reviewed. This was possible because of the God sent governor, Chief Engr. Dr. David Nweze Umahi who has created a beautiful environment for the workers in the L.G.E.A and the state at large.
We are also grateful to the EB-SUBEB Chairman, High Chief Hyacinth Ikpo (KSJI). His dynamic and purposeful leadership at the Board has brought cordial working relationship at the L.G.E.A in the state.
Worthy of mention also are the members of staff of Ohaozara wonderful people.
