Abakaliki Local Government Education Authority stands as one of the frontiers of His Excellency, Chief Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the Executive Governor in consolidating the dividends inherent in the aggressive and holistic education development in Ebonyi State.

Decisively, Abakaliki Local Government Education Authority has embraced its task of re-positioning the basic education sub-sector at the grassroots in compliance with His Excellency’s enviable investment in the sector and yearnings for the education of Ebonyi children for a brighter future.

Holistically, the authority took a survey of the basic educational needs of pupils and students, collated data on the state of classroom blocks, facilities and other challenges that could undermine the course of education in the area. These measures informed the sacrifices, commitment to duty and resolve of the education secretary of the authority, Hon Dominic Edda to judiciously step down the developmental strides and interventions of the State Chief Executive in the basic schools of Abakaliki Local Government Council for the benefit of the children at the grassroots.

Remarkably, quality projects and programmes of the State Government, the Local Government Council and the self-help efforts of the education authority were carefully channeled accordingly between 2015 and date.
In performance of its statutory role, the education authority fielded pupils in the 2017 and 2018 Lafarge African National Literacy “Spelling Bee” competitions organized by Ovie Brume Foundation.

Secondly, assigning value to the agricultural revolution of the state government, and back to school agricultural farming policy, Abakaliki Local Government Education Authority initiated a regular “aggressive school agricultural sensitization” tour. The visits to schools were to mobilize teachers, pupils and students of primary and junior secondary schools in the area to embrace farming/agriculture as a source of livelihood.

On the area of quiz competition, the local education encouraged and sponsored a pupil, Master Nwakiriko Chikaodile of Nkwagu primary school to the 2017 grand finale of National Annual Science and Mathematics quiz competition held in Abuja, where the pupil emerged the best overall learner in Mathematics.

Furthermore, the education authority courageously braced the tasks of routine checks, spot check and full management supervision and monitoring of schools to ensure enhanced teaching and learning. It equally embarked on the supervision of effective implementation of the new curriculum of learning in all the primary and junior secondary schools in Abakaliki LGA.

It is gratifying to put on record that within the period under review, Abakaliki Local Education Authority constructed 100 partitions of “steel shelf” for the preservation of staff files and other essential documents meant to strengthen office activities.

The professional development/capacity building of the operators of the basic education system in the area got a boost with the training of school heads and their assistants on “School Record Keeping” between 6th and 9th April, 2018 in collaboration with UNICEF.

In a bid to perfectly enhance academic activities in the 85 primary and 12 junior secondary schools of a population of 19,452 pupils, 4,663 students with 987 teachers in primary and 169 teachers in JSS, the Abakaliki Local Government Education Authority conceived a workable platform that provided for the immediate lifting of the authority’s allocation of education materials from the SUBEB headquarters to all the schools to facilitate teaching and learning.

The Abakaliki Local Government Education Authority has defied challenges to preserve its relevance as the medium for the development of basic education programmes at the grassroots. Foresight, devotion and commitment as well as the support and cooperation of the stakeholders in the area ensured the achievements of the education authority between 2015 and date.
The authority is committed to its charge of consistently complementing the efforts of the State Governor and the State Universal Basic Education Board, Abakaliki towards the actualization of the tenets of the Universal Basic Education programme and the free education policy of the State Government in the basic education schools of Abakaliki Local Government Council.

Hon. Dominic Edda,
Education Secretary
Abakaliki LGA.
